I began photographing the Honeys and Bears synchronized swim club when I was a student at the International Centre of Photography in New York in 2015. This series challenges the visual and spoken language that subversively labels older adults as less valuable and desirable. The subjects of SWIMMERS are mostly African-American seniors (average age 75) who float and glide in a pool surrounded by cracked mosaic tiles and cathedral windows at the Hansborough pool in Harlem. The pool was closed in early 2020 and is in the process of being demolished and rebuilt.
