Why is it underwear (usually unwashed) that drops to the floor in the laundry mat? Not a shirt or pants or a dish cloth.

And why do we refer to underwear as a pair? Example: "I don't have a clean pair of underwear."
Underwear is a single item - although one pair covers two cheeks.
